Commercial General Liability
What commercial general liability insurance?
Commercial General Liability (CGL) is an insurance policy that protects you from third-party bodily injury and property claims. First parties are people that work directly for you, like employees, partners, and owners. Second-party would be the insurance carrier. This policy is intended to cover things that happen with third parties like customers, clients, and other people not working for the business.
What’s covered?
Most CGL policies have three layers:
Coverage A - Bodily Injury & Property Damage
This includes coverage for bodily harm, disease, or sickness, including situations that involve death.
For example, you’re on a job and knock a latter over and hits someone in the head and causes brain damage.
Coverage B - Personal & Advertising Injury
This includes coverage that doesn’t relate to bodily injury and property damage, but still causes damages to third parties.
Examples include, but not limited to, libel, slander, copyright infringement, misappropriation of advertising ideas.
Coverage C - Medical Payments
This is a policy that can pay for small medical bills, regardless of liability.
For example, say a customer cuts their finger and needs to get a few stitches.
How much does it cost?
Commercial General Liability policies are rated off a few key details. They range from $500 a year for a small and simple company, to $50,000+ for a large and complex business. Most CGL policies are rated off the following:
Annual Sales (the more money = the more risk)
Nature of Operations (office business vs construction business have different risk levels)
Experience (new business vs established business creates varying rates)
