WHY is LIDAR used in the energy sector?

There are many applications for LiDAR in the energy sector. Today, we are seeing LiDAR used in solar, oil & gas, and electrical engineering. For example, wind turbines performance are based off the wind speed and wind turbine power. It’s vital to have an accurate view of the site’s wind conditions, and the energy that could be captured by each turbine. The accuracy of the turbines location and angle is critical for optimal power generation.

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology allows energy companies to accurately measure the wind parameters and reduce the costs associated with collecting the key data.

HOW DOES LIDAR WORK?

LiDAR (which by the way is a play on the word radar), is attached to a drone, plane, or helicopter. It uses laser light beams to bounces off airborne particles to determine wind speed. The data is then combined with control algorithms and produces mutli-dimensional wind information.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE CORRECT INSURANCE FOR MY EQUIPMENT?

LiDAR technology is a very expensive and sophisticated technology. As soon as your equipment leaves the ground and is in the air or on the water, the traditional insurance policy may not cover the equipment. It’s important your policy has an aviation endorsement that protects the equipment in the event that it is damaged during a flight.

It’s also important that you work with an agent that understands your business and who has access to the right insurance carriers.
