Aviation Liability Insurance

What is aviation liability insurance?

This insurance policy primarily covers third-party bodily injury and property damage due to an accident involving your manned or unmanned aircraft.

For example, if your drone crashes into a person that is not employed by your business and they need medical attention, the insurance policy will pay for damages. (see Workers Compensation insurance for employee-related injuries.

What limits do I need?

Standard limits of insurance for Aviation Liability are $1,000,000 Per Occurrence, however, policies can go above $10,000,000 Per Occurrence. Some governmental agencies require at least $5,000,000 limits, however it depends on the state and operations.

How much does it cost?

The insurance is based on a few factors that determine the price. Some include the following:

  • the type of operations (surveying, photography, etc)

  • the experience of the pilot (s)

  • the number of drones / aircrafts

  • the size of the drones / aircrafts

Single drone (UAV) policies start at $600 a year or $30 a month.


Hull Coverage

What is hull coverage?

This insurance policy covers the physical drone from a list of perils such as theft or damage.

For example, if you are flying your drone and it crashes and there is partial damage or a full loss, the insurance carrier will pay up to the limit on the policy or replace the drone.

How much does hull coverage cost?

The price for hull coverage depends on a few factors such as the value of the drone, the weight, pilot’s experience, and location. Rates range from 2% of the value to 10% of the value, so if you have a $5,000 drone, the price ranges from $200 to $500 a year.


Payload Coverage

What is payload Coverage?

This insurance covers equipment attached to a drone (ie, cameras, sensors, and other valuable items).

For example, if your drone crashes and the equipment is it carrying is damaged, the insurance will replace the unit.

How much does payload insurance cost?

The price of payload insurance depends on the type of equipment, the value of the equipment, and a few other things like distance from buildings, if you are flying over water, and the heights you are flying. Most carriers have a 4% to 12% rate depending on underwriting details.
